Welcome

We love June • It’s been a funny old year so far (I am, as you can see, the master of the understatement), with everything turned on its head. However, it has brought home to me how lucky I am to have a garden. Many of us turned extra attention and effort into our gardens this spring and now, as we barge into summer, we are beginning to reap the rewards, from rows of slug-free salads to borders bursting with colour and scent. If ever there was a silver lining to this particularly dark cloud it can be found in our gardens.

Expert’s choice Aquilegias • These cottage garden favourites come in a huge range of shapes and colours says Graham Rice

Grow your FREE seeds with us #GWsowalong • Join our SowAlong this month and we’ll guide you through your seed sowing every step of the way. With online answers to your queries, and extra hints and tips, seed sowing has never been so easy

How to get involved

Coming up roses • The gates may be closed, but head gardeners are still working hard – we asked a few from our 2 for 1 scheme to share their expert advice for beautiful roses

Sign up for garden updates

The Full Monty • A master at the art of gardening, social distancing has forced Monty to apply himself to the craft of film making – with mixed results

Over the fence • Is there enough scientific evidence to prove gardening is good for our health?

Have your say • The view from your side of the fence

Write to us at

Clippings • Our roundup of the month’s latest gardening news and views

My gardening world Sam McKnight • Sam has created hairstyles for some of the world’s most iconic figures, from Kate Moss to the late Princess Diana. Over the past nine years, he has turned his creativity to his own back garden

News in brief

Our favourite gardening reads • Need inspiration or tips on how to get the best from your garden, or just fancy a great read? Then look no further than the GW team’s favourite gardening books – from cut flowers to planting plans, there’s something for everyone

Rays of hope • If you’re struggling with what to grow in a shady spot, don’t despair – Monty sheds light on the many beautiful plants that thrive in the shadows

Edible plants for shade

Summer in a pot • Carol shows you how to create low-maintenance container displays that are full of vibrant colour. Plus learn how to keep the wow factor going all year round

Carol’s container favourites

Carol’s year-round container plan • Rather than lasting for just one season, with Carol’s simple tweaks container displays can be made into year-round focal points. Simply add and subtract seasonal treats to the permanent plants and get ahead with bulbs for easy impact.

As the sun sets… • With the long evenings of summer ahead, Adam Frost shows how to transform your garden for twilight with simple outdoor lighting.

POWER SOURCES

Outdoor lighting • Make the most of your garden at night with sparkling mood lighting. Our top picks willl help you create a magical evening atmosphere
