Welcome

We love January • Usually January is a pretty grim month - well summed up in the 1975 number one single by a Scottish band called Pilot which went: “January, sick and tired you’ve been hanging on me. You make me sad with your eyes, you’re telling me lies…”. But this is a new year and we should be embracing it with a new spirit of optimism. So, I am forcibly eschewing all talk of bleak chilliness, forlorn resolutions and post-Christmas blues. Instead we will embrace this month’s plants with a beatifc smile, a spring in our heels and a merry whistle upon our lips.

Expert’s choice Heucheras • These largely evergreen perennials offer a rainbow of leaf colours, from plum to coral, says Graham Rice

The Full monty • Even the best-laid plans are subject to change, as Monty muses on his arrival at Longmeadow 30 years ago, and how the garden has evolved since

Have your say • The view from your side of the fence

Peat use in gardening: your responses

Clippings • Our roundup of the month’s latest gardening news and views

My gardening world Dr Rangan Chatterjee • Rangan Chatterjee is a doctor, author, podcaster and television presenter, best known for BBC One’s Doctor in the House. His bestselling books are about improving health, lowering stress and getting more sleep.
